Wartime Wireless

My mother was crying,
Listening to the radio,
A man in a camp,
Found a bag of crusts,
Hurried to his hut
To devour his frugal feast.

Driven by insatiable hunger,
Fellow prisoners pushed and grabbed
‘Til not a crumb was left.
And on the ground, his bare skull broken
Lay the bread benefactor,
Dead in the crumb crush.

Later.

My mother greeted us,
“It’s all over.�
“Will there still be ‘The News’
Now the war is over?�
A child’s understanding of news
Caused amusement,
My mother was laughing.
