We were based in Antigua and I remember one day going on a training route march. We were carrying blank ammunition, not live. The Sergeant Major sent me to the front of the patrol as a scout to locate any enemy. If I didn't see any other army I was supposed to wave our patrol on. I saw a lot of kids on the road but no army so I said it was safe and waved them on. But it wasn't safe. Rapid fire was suddenly on them and they had to take cover by the side of the road. The Sergeant Major cursed me for making the wrong decision - he said if it had been real ammunition and a real ambush, everyone would have been dead.
