It was the night they bomed Coventry. We lived in kings heath Birmingham. We had a shop on the high street selling second hand furniture.
I was six years old, we lived above the shop and we had a celler. Since the war started we all slept in the celler, we had carpet on the floor, camp beds and a big iron bedsted, my mother had made it quite comfortable in the celler.
Well this particular night we all had gone
down to the celler to go to bed. But the planes kept coming getting louder and louder the sirens going and the searchlights crossing over the celler back and forth. The AK AK guns and the bombs were going off very loudly and sounded very near, my mom said "eveyone under the bed" it was a big double bed plenty of room underneath it. We all got under the bed my mom (Lilly), my brother (Carl), our maid Jane and me. My dad wasn't there he was on patrol warden this night.
The planes and bombs went on all night we played games such as I spy.
At about 5 o'clock in the morning it all started to carm down, my mom told us all to come out from under the bed, so we did except-- then we heard a little voice saying "I cant Mrs Clements i'm stuck" Jane was a big girl and she got under the bed in such a fright she just couldn't get out again. So we all lifted the bed and out Jane came. We all had a good laugh over that.
Oh what a night!!
