There were mock battles all round Salisbury to keep everyone on their toes. On one occasion the local ѿý Guard was defending Bemerton against the “Germans” who were really the Dorset Regiment. There was a Bren gun placement at the base of St. Andrew`s church tower. The Dorset Regiment marched quietly down Church Lane and through the swing gates at the bottom and took the Bemerton ѿý Guard completely by surprise; they thought the “enemy” was coming from Quidhampton and they were very peeved at being captured.
On another occasion the exercise was to cope with the aftermath of a bombing; I was in a house in Skew Bridge Road and was to be a casualty - I got moved to the Red House.
The Barn was Southern Command`s motor transport HQ.
