One night Birmingham had a real pounding from the bombers. I stood at the top of our yard in a small orchard and although Birmingham was about 20 miles away the sky was ablaze, red and glowing. I could clearly make out the anti aircraft flack and search lights, and we could hear all the engine noise from the bombers. It was horrendous.

Harry Bowen was our next door neighbour. The air attack affected me so much I carved my initials RJ and the date 17.11.41 to record the big raid on Birmingham on the wall of his coalhouse. I wonder if it’s still there.
