When my grandfather was quite young they hadn't really experienced the war as Derby wasn't particularly attacked. There was only one Bombing Raid on the Rolls-Royce factory, which, of course, produced the Merlin engine for the Lancaster Bomber and the Spitfire.
A man was walking down Broadway on leave from the Air Force when a Messerschmidt flew overhead. He spotted the light blue uniform and circled round before firing his machine guns. The man dived into a bush and the plane flew off pursued by two Hurricanes. My grandfather watched all this from his bedroom upstairs.
