My father was on fire watch on top of a church in Streatham High Street 1944. He would cycle up from Brixton and then back again each day. One day after finishing his shift he was on his bike and half way down Streatham high street.
When he noticed that everyone was diving to the ground? And continued to cycle until he heard the noise? it was a V-1 or Buzz Bomb. As anyone who who had lived through that time will tell you as long as you heard it you were ok. when it stopped that was the time to take cover.
So he went on his way, only to find that the noise went instead of stopping and jumping of his bike! He went like the clappers and the bomb followed him! Half way down Brixton Hill he decided to make a jump for it and the Buzz bomb went by him and blew up not far away.
Dad used to tell this and the rest of the family where on the floor laughing there heads of!
