Iwas 5 years old when, returning by rail from a family Wakes week holiday in Southport, Ifirst became aware of the war. It was September 1939; when the train reached the built-up outskirts of Manchester, Isaw through the carriage window, several large, dull-grey balloons hanging in the sky, attached to the ground by cables. In answer to my question, my Dad replied "There is to be a war".
