It was the period in between my first evacuation period to Tiverton, and my second to Wolverhampton.
I was visiting my grandmother Mrs Lawrence who lived at 213 Cricklewood Broadway,London- above a barbers shop.

Gran,Uncle Bill,Uncle Arthur and epileptic Aunt Nell, were all engaged in redecorating Gran's kitchen.

Uncle Arthur was a bricklayer and had repaired a substantial area of unsound plaster prior to redecorating .They were just in the process of hanging wallpaper, when we heard the sound of an aircraft engine.

"That's a doodlebug Bill",said Gran to Uncle Bill. "No it's not Ange" (Angel)"it's a Spitfire".

Uncle Bill pushed up the sash window, and put his head out to look, just as the engine sound stopped! There was a short period of silence followed my a mighty explosion.

The glass fell out of the window, covering Uncle Bill with shards of glass but causing him no injury, and the remaining old plaster fell off the walls in a cloud of dust.

I was later told that the V1 had hit the Smiths factory, but I am not sure whether that was the Smith's Crisp or Smith's Clock
factory.
