VE BIG Thank You Day
This is a story about Jack Whitehead written by Adam Graham and Kalil Umarji.
Jack Whitehead an 83 year old man from the worst period in history-World War 2. Jack was 18 when the war started. He had many girlfriends before the war and he is now married to a widow and lives in Lancashire. Jack didn’t get evacuated or sent out to war because he worked on farmland. Back then people milked cows with their hands. He ate eggs and was allowed to kill pigs for bacon and other food, he grew potatoes as well.
After the war Jack managed the farm for 15 years and went too work somewhere else in 1965-75 in a hospital.
They didn’t need bomb shelters because not many bombs were dropped were he was.
There weren’t any fashion makes then people just wore ordinary suits, suits cost just £2.50. A pint of beer was just 4p and milk was 2p fish and chips was 1p. Jack had one day off work a month and was paid 9 shillings (£1.08) a week.
They used oil lamps and candles for lighting. Only farmers could have cars then and there was only 5 motor vehicles in Whalley then. New fords were only £100 back then. He had two older brothers he was the youngest. His oldest brother was a sea captain and died in New Zealand; his other brother is still alive and visits other homes as well. He has a Kit bag from America from the war which a friend gave to him. There wasn’t much entertainment and to go to the pictures was just 6p. His parents live in nelson. He got married in 1953.
