I was a nursing officer. I remember pregnant mothers being sent from London to be cared for, but I wasn’t given extra staff. Mothers had to be billeted all over Leicester. I had to organise confinements and residents hosting these women weren’t happy. Pregnant mums found themselves in houses where the hosts didn’t want them. Miraculously, all mothers were homed and babies safely delivered.
