I was 25 when the war broke out, and was working as an electrician. There was no work as an electrician because of the war so I worked as a taxi driver.

My wife was a “nippy” at the Lyons Tea Shop in Ilford.

We lived at Manor Park but got bombed out. We then lived at Manning Road in Romford.

I remember going past a pub where lots of people sheltering from the bombs had been drowned in the sewerage. I remember falling flat on my face during the bombing.

We slept in the shelters in my parents’ garden.

We biked everywhere in those days.

I remember I once saw the asbestos that had been blown off the factory roof, and once the windows and doors of our house had been blown open.

I got back to working as an electrician, making metals for the war work.
