Born in 1920 Edwin Carne, the son of a Master Baker, passed the C&G National Technical Certificate and Diploma for Breadmaking and Confectionary at the age of 17.
He ignored his fathers advice and joined the RAF as aircrew, became a pilot, served as a flying instructor and later as a night fighter pilot with No 25 Mosquito Squadron.
On demobilisation in 1946 he went back to the bakery business and in 1960 became Managing Director of British Bakels Ltd.
