In May 1945 when aged 6, I saw my father hide the Daily Mirror under the seat - something he never did. When I opened it up I saw all the pictures of Belsen and as a child I was suddenly faced with the reality of life - which has affedcted me all my life. I didn't relate German POWs who dug my garden with this and the effect of that turned me into an anti-racist and eventually a Liberal Democrat councillor. I joined the Liberal party in 1963 because of this.
