George, a coalminer in the Second World War was a voluntary fireman so life was all work and no play. He couldn’t fight in the war, as coalminers were a necessity for the country during the war. He laboured all through the day and was sometimes needed during the night as a volunteer fireman. When he married Ellen the war had ended but he was still needed as a fireman. He had a bell in his home, which rang when he was requested to fight the fires. The ration books were still used when his first daughter Elaine was born 1952. The baby had her own book of stamps for clothes and food. His brother had been a prisoner during the war, but to the family’s joy, he escaped. He kept the story of his escape to himself and still to this day, no one knows how he did survive and return home.
