At the beginning of the Blitz, one Saturday afternoon, there was a raid, a very bad one. The Ack Ack had shot down one of the planes and it landed in a field somewhere in Dagenham and an airman had baled out. All the men in our road got their bikes and rode up there, armed with garden forks and spades. They didn't get to him, thank goodness (he turned out to be a Czech).

I'll never forget that sight, we were watching from our bedroom window as the parachute came down - much more exciting for us than sitting in the shelter!
