When the war broke out, I was in boarding school in Bournemouth. My mother had come down from London to take me to visit my brother's boarding school. While on the bus, the sirens were heard and the planes came over.

People on the bus wanted the driver to stop but he wanted to continue. He stopped, people got off the bus and hid in nearby gardens. A lot of them got killed.

My mum had the sense to stay on the bus and pushed me to the floor. We were both alright. When the air raid was over, we had to walk back to the boarding school through the rubble. We never managed to get to my brother's.

That was the only time my Mum was really frightened. She was a nurse down the Underground and used to go down there and sleep on the platform.

I remember getting 2oz of butter, two eggs and we used to go to Cullen's shop in Chapel Market to buy broken biscuits.

Saturday morning pictures was sixpence a time. I also remember the gas lamps.

People stuck together and made their own fun.
