I was about four years old in the early part of the war. Colin was on his tricycle; we were chasing the ice-cream van up to Whitnash. The man had sold all the ices but gave us some wafers. Walking back Colin attracted my attention to a plane shining in the sun with no markings. Black objects appeared from beneath it and we saw tracer coming from the front turret, arcing down, and we heard the 'ack ack'. Colin, who was a year older than me, shouted 'Chr*st it's a Jerry'. He pedalled his trike, I jumped on the back and we went back towards Leamington. People were cycling back to work at the factory (at the end of the lunch-break) and we called out 'Hey mister, the Germans have bombed Lockheed'. I subsequently worked at Lockheed myself for 25 years and the bomb damage could still clearly be seen - holes through the girders, dents etc. - in the machine shop (later on the brake assembly area). Photos of the aftermath of the attack survive.
