I was a young schoolgirl at the beginning of the war, and we had to carry our gas masks all the time - in the boxes with string to put around our necks!
I used to spend my Saturday money (about 6d old money) on a few sweets and a visit to the local cinema (admittance 3d) on Saturday afternoon.
Onve there was a long film being shown, and my friends and I decided to take sandwiches to eat during the performance. We put the sandwiches in our gas mask boxes instead of the gas masks! Not sure if we enjoyed the film - we were worried about what would happen to us if we were found out.
