My father was in London together with my mother to be presented with the DCM for service in Burma. He had been brought back early before the end of the war with Japan as he had severe Malaria. My mother said that she would never forget the scenes outside the palace and all over London that day. People were bringing out anything they could find including their furniture to place on bonfires and that the birthrate would soar as people just threw caution to the wind they were so happy.
My father himself, altho he would never talk of why he was awarded his medal, told us of the soldier beside him who fainted when the King pinned on his George Cross medal in the palace.
