I was born 6th December 1941 a few hours before the battle for Pearl Harbour begun so by the end of WW2 I was still a very young child. However, I believe that the odd childhood memory stays with you all your life and I remember well parts of the VE day street party. We had all just finished our first course and my mother was serving the ice cream out of a large, tall, silver coloured canister. Striding up the road came Mr Elliott he was the local shoe repairer his shop was in Brighton. He was tall, slim and wore a dark suit complete with a bowler hat. He went up to my mother and said "may I have some my dear". My mother explained that she did not have any spare dishes, jokingly he took off his bowler hat "put it in this" he declared. I can still hear the kids shrieks of laughter as my mother duly obliged and handed him a spoon.
