My Father always told the story of how Major David Strangeways was rescued with his uint from Dunkirk by a Thames Barge. They took off their uniforms so that they could wade more quickly out to the boat. They were thrilled by their reception when they reached the dock, which I think was Portsmouth. However, the Lady Mayoress and photograhers were waiting for them and they had no trousers! Uncle David solved this by having them all dressed in the barges' net curtains - suitably draped! This is a family story but I know you will be able to verify it because David stayed on in the army as a chaplain and then retired to become a vicar and he was a fantastic man and a great friend to my father.
