When Italy declared war, my grandmother had in her pantry a tin of Italian plum tomatoes. Throughout the war, she refused to open the tomatoes, in case they were booby-trapped, and they stayed on the pantry shelf. As soon as the war was over, on VE Day, she opened the tin and used the tomatoes - obviously, once Italy was no longer the enemy, the tomatoes must have been safe!
