War effort.
I remember those of us who had bikes, going out with Miss Elliott to collect foxgloves along the hedgerows by Mugginton Lane End, for the digitalis presumably. I don’t remember whether it was the flowers or the leaves but I know the sun was shining. We had First Aid classes and that was when I first saw myself as Florence Nightingale. It only took six months to prove me wrong a few years later. I also spent several days writing names on Ration Books but I can’t remember how that came about. In 1939 we had morning lessons one week and afternoon; lessons the next so we had a complete timetable every fortnight with extra homework to keep us busy on the half days we were at home. This went on until enough shelters had been built.
