My Father, Bertie James New, served in the First World War and had remained very active in the British Legion. In 1938 the call went out for volunteers to go and police Czechoslovakia. My father volunteered straight away. He was issued with a very smart uniform, which he showed us with great pride, and a walking stick as his only means of defence. Come the second week of October he boarded the ship and set sail for Czechoslovakia. Meanwhile, Chamberlain came back brandishing his slip of paper and consequently the ship was recalled 3 days out of harbour. He returned home and served in the Rescue and Demolition squad for the period of the war.
