My grandad was called up too join the army at the age of 19 and he had no option whether he wanted to fight or not.He decided to join the royal navy and he had to go down to Plymouth for 3 months training. He was assigned to a landing craft. Landings crafts had to pick up troops that were either on land or on board troop carriers and take them to fight the Japanese in the Far East.In his time in the navy he visited India,Burma,Malaysia,Thailand, the Phillipines and Singapore.Sometimes his ship picked up Indian Nationalists who were fighting with the Japanese and they were taken to troop carriers and then arrested.
There were 20 full time sailers onboard the ship and when they weren't looking out for Japanese planes or troop carriers they had to clean the ship.
