I was an engine driver and one of my jobs was to take the women to the armaments factory in Swynnerton. They were very cliquey, the women from different towns didn’t mix. I drove down the loop line and the Newcastle line. The women from one town asked me deliberately to overshoot the platform with the first coach so that the women from the other town couldn’t get in with them. They gave us fags at the weekend if we did this!
