During the war we often had German bombers flying over our village to drop their bombs on Liverpool which was only seven miles away. One evening I was returning home from collecting kitchen scraps from neighbours which we boiled up, mixed with balancer meal and fed to our hens. As I was nearing my home I saw a strange man who beckoned me. We children had been taught not to go near anyone that we did not know, so I just ran home. I told my dad, who was in the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard, about it and as a result he notified the rest of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard and they searched for the man. They eventually caught him in West Kirby,a neighbouring village and he spent the rest of the war in a prison camp.
