As a post war baby,I grew up hearing of my 3 elder siblings accounts to my parents and myself, of life as evacuees, near Brackley, Northants.
Apart from the obvious concerns of your children leaving home for the first time alone, was the customary check of all heads for nits. These were not present then, but were later found on my 2 sisters and brother, during their period of evacuation. Also of course, the exact place of the childrens destinations, were not divulged at that stage.
During their stay, there were accounts of meagre portions of food, but the not so meagre portions for the hosts and their family, and accounts of "put upon" domestic duties for my then 14 year old sister.
The last straw was when on a weekend visit, my parents saw that the children of the family were wearing the hand knitted socks and cardigan made by my mother as birthday presents for my sisters.
This prompted the quick return of them all back home to Greenwich, S.E. London, where they stayed for the remainder of the war.
