In our home in Manchester Road late 1939 /1940 when I was about 8 years old, we had a little girl slightly older then me as an evacuee. Her name was Elena and her mother was a Spanish widowed lady, who had been married to an Englishman. She played the piano at the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½. Elena was a sad little girl who missed her mother, and her mother missed her little girl. It was very sad when she visited and had to say goodbye. so she only stayed a few months. They preferred to take their chances in London. She was lucky to be able to see her mother, as many evacuees did not.
