During the war the cricket pitches were used by many service sides. I remember a fast bowler of RAF XI taking 4 wickets in the first over of a match, then asked to be taken off, so as not to spoil the game for the other 21 players. That player was Keith Miller the later great Australian cricketer. I remember also P.B.H. May (Surrey), H.R.H. Prince Phillip, J. Hardstaff, The Bedser Twins, Sam Cook, G. Emmett, T. Goddard, A. Mortimer, D. Sheppard, Barry Richards, J. Crapp, A. Milton and so many more.
Hitler failed to close the club during the war, every night fire watchers volunteered to man the pumps if necessary. Often enough for a card school could be mustered to while away the long night hours.
