The Vessel that my father sailed on, HMS Vindictive
This story was submitted to the People's War site by the CSV Action Desk at ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Gloucestershire on behalf of Mr Coombs with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
When I was ten years old I was evacuated from Brixton in London and sent to Paignton in Devon with the rest of the school.
My father was in the Navy in the Norwegian Fjords, so I didn’t get to see him a lot.
The time in Devon was one of the best childhood memories that I have. I used to pick pin roses, bunch them up and sell them in the town.
I also had to share a bed with fellow evacuees, but I used to sleepwalk and when I woke up I climbed back into the bed, and the light went on and I realised that I was in the wrong bed!
