I was only sixteen and a half when I joined the home guard. I remember there were people of eighty from the Boer War who were sharp as anything who were also in the home guard.

I remember during the invasion of europe that we in the home guard were on duty along the railway lines at night in case the german paratroops landed. Our training could be better than the army's and included training by the top unit Gloucester school of instruction in the Mendip hills. It included booby trapping houses and aircraft operations. We did 60 hours a week at work plus one night a week home guard duty and yet we never really felt tired. The food rationing was excellent. People had such focus so they never felt stress. You were in control of your mind.
