At ITW Torquay in 1940 I shared a room with "Screwball" Beurling. He had made at least one journey back to Canada to establish his validity for joining the RAF. At the end of the war he was a squadron leader DFC, DFM and bar. He was the No 1 ace fighter pilot of the war having at least 30 victories. He was killed in a flying accident in China in the 1960's.
