British, Commonwealth and German War Graves in St Nicholas Churchyard, North Cotes, Lincolnshire. Most of these War Graves date from World War Two and were airmen based at the nearby North Cotes airfield. (Photograph taken on 60th Anniversary weekend of VE Day)
During World War Two there was an RAF Airfield at North Cotes, Lincolnshire. There are more than 30 Allied servicemen and 3 German airmen buried in St Nicholas' Churchyard in North Cotes village. Most of these date from World War Two. There was also 1 Royal Flying Corps serviceman who was buried in the churchyard in 1917 (World War One).
Many of the airmen buried at North Cotes during World War Two were originally from overseas, especially Canadians. Sometimes floral tributes have been placed on individual graves, including the Germans. It is probable these tributes have been placed there by relatives.
Most of the World War Two fatalities date from between 1940 and 1943. They are remembered each year on Remembrance Sunday.
