My name is Betty Hancock nee Howard, I was ten years old when Mr Churchill announced on the wireless that the war in Europe was over.
One of my memories is of a Sunday afternoon when the barrage balloons were down over Radway Green munitions factory, and the German bombers raided the factory - on their return flight they unloaded their unused bombs over Chesterton in North Staffordshire. A boy from the school I attended was at home ill in bed - a blast blew him out of bed, and they couldn't find him.
A few days later workmen went up onto the cinema (The Alexandra) roof to repair it, it had also been damaged in the raid and found the dead boy. A bad memory, but we were happy as children of the war years generally.
