As we arrived at Leconfield for the first time, a hearse was just leaving. Despite this rather ominous beginning, things turned out not to be too bad. Squadron life was fairly laid back…with little real hassle — except in the air.

Many of us spent free evenings in the Beverley Arms getting quietly smashed. The three-mile walk back to Leconfield helped sober us up.

The pubs we used were the King’s Head in Market Square, and the Beverley Arms — or any place where the beer was flowing as it usually ran out!
