When my Aunty Joyce married Uncle Bernard we all went to the ceremony.
After this the family was gathered at Grandma's house for the reception ... well, really a few sandwiches and THE wedding cake.
I had heard all about wedding cakes and the fact that they were coated in Royal Icing which appealed to my youthful sweet tooth.
After a few speeches the bride and groom were toasted with fruit cordial (this was a strict Methodist House). Then came the moment for which I had been waiting, the cutting and distribution of the cake.
Imagine my horror when the 'icing' was removed to disclose a sponge cake.
The 'icing' was in fact a cardboard and plaster shape decorated to look like icing (after all sugar was rationed and could not be spared for such frivolities as icing!)
