At the beginning of the war my father, John Orchard, found himself in a Protected job working for London Transport. So he spent much of his time with the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard and as an Air Raid Warden.
Of the few stories he told of that time, he recalled how in joy on VE Day he rang a hand bell from the Air Raid Wardens’ Hut all day long until it seemed his arm would drop off.
