When the war started I was working in a foundry in Derby making mowers. This changed to munitions - 10/12 inch mortars and hand grenades. We worked long hours and were expected to do shifts at night and weekends too. I didn't really like the idea of what we were doing as I know these weapons would go on to kill someone. If one job dried up in the factory we would be put on another. We all mucked in. We had a shelter there that we would have to use if the sirens went. The war meant more women went to work which gave us more freedom.
