It was July 1944. I was in the bedroom with my baby who was in the cot. The doodlebugs were coming overhead and when you couldn't hear them it meant that they'd dropped their bombs. I was next to the cot and I couldn't get out of the door. It had jammed. All the glass in the windows fell out and fell onto the dining table. The wall collapsed on the back of the cot. I was by the cot and I was wearing a locket with a photo in it on a chain around my neck. My baby grabbed it and I didn't realise that it had fallen on the floor and it got squashed by the wheel of the cot. All that was left was the photo inside. My daughter's still got that photo.
Me and the baby were fine - just shocked. After the war we got £19 compensation for the damage.
