My lasting Memory of World War II is…the comradeship. I never wanted to serve in the forces and, if there had not been a war, I wouldn’t have done. But I’m proud to be British and when called I was ready to do my bit. After three and a half years, I was saying “I wouldn’t have missed the experiences” good and bad for anything. Your outlook was very much broadened, you mix with all sorts and found good points in everybody and everybody felt responsibility for one another (as did the civilians at home). I wish this care was with us today instead of the couldn’t care less attitude. But there’s always hope.
