Pierless Defences at Minehead

The Minehead Pier was built in 1901. During the war they decided to put these guns on the harbour wall facing down the Channel. Once erected they noticed the pier was in the way, so they decided to take the pier down. The Campbell Steamers used to use the pier for trippers, so they weren’t pleased. While they were taking down the pier it was so cold the workmen’s fingers were being frozen to the metal as they worked. After they had demolished the pier they tested the guns and found they shook the harbour wall so much it wasn’t possible to use them.
