My father, Harry NORTHOVER, was employed by the War Office in early 1944 to make white-painted, wooden notice boards on stakes, for use in France after D-day. Directions were to be written on them for the troops, after they had landed. He had a special order from the Salisbury Timber Commpany and the boards, of various sizes, began to fill his workshop.
The day they were collected, he showed my mother and I the empty space. 'There', he said, 'They've got their boards, so they can start the Invasion when they like now!' D-day was only a day or two later.
When I see pictures of battle-scenes with notice boads, I wonder if they are his.
The off-cuts were used to make wooden toys for Christmas and bundles of kindling wood for elderly neighbours.
