My baby sister was issued with a Mickey Mouse gas mask which, because she was a big baby with a big head, it was far too small. We older children had ones like the adults in cardboard boxes which we had to carry to school each day. One day, after getting off the school bus, I went underneath the bridge over the Loach Brook at the bottom of Chelford Road, for some reason put my gas mask down and it rolled into the brook which was quite high and fast flowing at the time. The ruined gas mask was found some days later by a neighbour; the local A.R.P. warden had no spare ones! So, if there had been a gas attack, two of our family would not have been protected.
