Norman lived in Manchester during the Blitz. He thought the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard were very funny, and later felt that Dad's Army was very kind to them. He was a major seconded to the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Guard, and was "captured" during an exercise, but he pretended he had a hand grenade and legged it.

Interviewed by Ben McCrory at the Seven Ages of Manchester event in Exchange Square, Manchester, 17 June 2005.
