AUGUST 1940. AFTER SCHOOL WAS IN GARDEN WHEN HEARD AIRCRAFT ENGINES. GOT LOUDER THEN ABOVE ME, VERY LOW A DORNIER "FLYING PENCIL". AS I LOOKED UP I SAW GERMAN AIRCREW IN NOSE OF AIRCRAFT LOOKING DOWN AT ME. THEN IT WAS GONE. HEARD LATER THEY HAD TRIED TO BOMB TRAIN ON LONG STRETCH SOUTH OF TOWN. HIT TRACK BUT JUST SHORT OF GUARDS VAN. POOR GUARD MUST HAVE HAD REAL SHOCK.
LATER-IN SEPTEMBER I THINK WAS AT SCHOOL IN PLAYING FIELD SLIT TRENCH. WATCHED MASS OG GERMAN BOMBERS HEADING NORTH. ATTACKED BY -AS MEMORY SEVES- 3 FIGHTERS. WE SHOUTED 2SPITFIRES" BUT AM SURE WERE HURRICANES.
NO BOMBERS APPEARED HIT. IT WAS A RAID ON FILTON-BRISTOL AIRCRAFT FACTORY. ABOUT 200 PEOPLE KILLED.
