When the V1 Rockets landed thousands of sparks would come up.
I was staying with my friend. I used to stay with his mum, Mrs Moore. I had to sleep in a very small bed, child’s size, in a Mowlem shelter. The shelters were made of brick. The house also had an old shop front.
I was a very keen dancer, and I still dance. One night, when I came home to the house, Mrs Moore said to me, “Where have you been?”
I said “Out dancing”.
She replied “You are always out dancing”. She said “Go and check your bed because I think one of the shop windows has been blasted in. I went to the shelter and noticed with horror that the whole of my bed, where I should have been sleeping that previous night, was covered with broken glass from the bomb the previous night. I counted myself lucky!
Our neighbours had actually even slept through the raid and hadn’t even heard it. Their windows had been blown in and their wardrobe collapsed!
The church spirte of the Christchurch , Princes Head, Battersea was destroyed in this bombing raid.
