When war broke out I had just passed the “scholarship” (as it was called then.)
As no air raid shelters had been built, we had to travel twice weekly to our new school for homework. (I make this excuse when I have to admit to being ignorant about some things). The school had a swimming pool which was across the playing fields away from the main school buildings. We therefore had to make long towelling robes which we wore whenever the siren sounded and proceed across the fields, dripping wet, to the shelters. Fortunately, this did not happen too often.
When I left school I started work as a comptometer operator at Thames Board Mills. At the weekend we went to local farms to dig veg. Sometimes the soil was baked hard in the sun and we got sun burnt!
