The one eyed Conscript

August 9 1946, demobbed from Trieste and Folkstone with some of my Cockney friends and comrades. I was invited to saty for a night at his parent's house by my best mate, George Wood, who had been the Sergeant Major's batman. It was a very pleasant interlude before I made my journey North.. I was also invited to spend a few hours with another mate, Charly Woods and his wife. Mrs Woods asked me if I would like a bath. I said, "yes please" and Mrs Woods went upstairs to prepare the bath. She came down and said that the bath was ready, all I had to do was run the water. Charlie needed to go to the toilet before I went into the bath. When he came down stairs his face was like thunder. "That bath was filthy yelled Charles there was all black stuff in the bath, I've washed it all away". "You balm pot" yelled Mrs Woods, "that black stuff was disinfectant, that's all we could get during the war. Didn't you know there had been a war on?".
